According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer of the breast, lung, and prostate are among the most common forms of cancer in the United States. Since 1948, the American Cancer Society has funded approximately $3.5 billion in research to help uncover new ways to fight this disease. There are several ways that those who want to support the Society’s efforts can get involved.

They can donate money by mail or phone; they can contribute their frequent-flier miles to help facilitate air transportation of cancer patients; or they can encourage their employers to participate in a matching gift program. Volunteer: There are many opportunities to volunteer, such as giving cancer patients a ride to their appointments as part of the Road to Recovery program, Participate: The American Cancer Society hosts events throughout the year, from black-tie galas and golf tournaments to marathons and triathlons. The Relay for Life is a run/walk designed to remember those who have been diagnosed with this disease. About the author: Dr. William B.
